It's something like a race, the opponent could be given a 25-meter handicap for a 50-meter race if, for instance, the "protagonist" is an adult and the opponent is a child.  At the same time, it's safe to say that the adult was "handicapped" by having to run 25 meter farther than the child, so "handicap" works both ways and only context can tell you what it is supposed to mean. VLZ_58)
