faces
Flat surfaces that make up the external shape of a crystal.
facet
Surface of a cut and polished gem.
faceting
Cutting and polishing of the surfaces of a gemstone into facets.
fan ring
A ring that resembles a fan when worn.

137.27 carats, was held by the Medici family of Florentine in 1657. During the 18th century is was in the Habsburg crown, then it was used as a brooch. After the First World War it's whereabouts are unknown.

A piece of jewelry that features flower stations or gemstone arrangements designed to resemble a flower.
fluorescence
Refers to the invisible wavelengths of light that become "visible" when exposed to ultraviolet radiation. Gems or pearls that exhibit color under ultraviolet light - color not seen under normal lighting conditions - are exhibiting fluorescence.
fob
An ornament worn on a keychain, a cell phone, or personal electronic device.
fracture
Chipping or breaking of a stone in a way unrelated to it's internal atomic structure. Because of this fractured surfaces are often uneven.
free-form stones
These stones are generally classified by the uneven or odd shape. When used in jewelry, they are usually highly polished and connect as charms or set with a tailored prong or varied setting. Free-form stones are popular in Bohemian jewelry and are often used in artisan pieces.
