support detachment A part of a unit separated from its main organization for duty elsewhere.
support detachment Elements of a specialized command (Artillery, Engineer, Transportation, Army Aviation, Intelligence) incorporated in an operations center, set up by the organic elements of the major unit or by the unit in charge of performing the support mission. Its role is to suggest the use of the assets due to which it was set up, draft the annexes of the operation order dealing with support and whose purpose is to inform the supported units, and above all to enable the support operations center to draft the orders to the support elements. In conjunction with the support operations centre, responsible for the control of support operations, the support detachment monitors the operations of the support elements. Certain service liaison officers (for example, the Air Liaison Officer) have a responsibility similar to that of a support detachment, regarding the use of the assets of their service. The drafting of the orders are of the responsibility of specialized organizations, which to not belong to the operations center.
