obstacle An obstruction designed or employed to disrupt, fix, turn, or block the movement of an opposing force and to impose additional losses in personnel, time and equipment on the opposing force. Obstacles can exist naturally or can be man-made, or can be a combination of both.
obstacle area Area on the battlefield not occupied by friendly troops, where obstacles have been constructed such as to prevent the enemy from crossing it before a specified time.
obstacle bypass A tactical task which involves maneuvering around an obstacle, position, or enemy force to maintain the momentum of advance.
obstacle cone Consistent organization of planned obstacles, usually of various types and spread out in the depth of the battlefield, on the probable penetration axes of the enemy.
obstacle construction Operation including the preparation and implementation of an obstacle.
obstacle free area An area the commander designates as restricted from the emplacement of man-made obstacles, normally to facilitate future operations.
obstacle list List drafted in peacetime after a recce of the obstacle network that can be constructed on the national territory.
obstacle maneuver Organization of the obstacles into consistent systems, adapted and incorporated to the tactical maneuver.
obstacle plan Plan defining the obstacle systems integrated in the manoeuvre, and determining the conditions for their setting up. These plans are developed at least at division level, based on a list of obstacles or on intelligence provided by command reconnaissance.
obstacle restricted area Area where it is possible to build obstacles, subject to the authorization of the authority in charge (minimum brigade) who will set the rules: for example, obstacle which can be easily neutralized, or which has a programmable lifespan, in order to enable a subsequent counter-attack.
obstacle transfer Transfer of responsibility, with or without a relieve of troops on the maneuver obstacles or obstacle zones.
obstacle zone A division-level* command and control measure, normally done graphically, to designate specific land areas where lower echelons are allowed to employ tactical obstacles. * Not necessarily according to the french concept.
obstacle-restricted area Area in which it is possible to build obstacles, with the approval of the appropriate authority (at least the brigade) and the latter will determine the rules: obstacle easy to neutralize for example, or with a life which can be programmed, in order to permit a later counterattack.
