The role of the MAIN CP, where the Force's commander normally stands, is to plan the manoeuvre at its level, and to conduct it in its area of responsibility. At the same tactical level, should several CPs be armed, only one of them assumes the function of MAIN CP. The transfer of operational direction from one to the other is called "release".

A concentration of forces or means, in a particular area and time, where a commander seeks to bring about a decision.
main effort
Ideal line alongside which the commander intends to conduct his/her action to reach an objective. The successive main efforts of a unit must contribute to maintain this unit on its direction.
main effort objective area
Area or point where the enemy is particularly vulnerable to the weapon systems effects and to the maneuver at a given time gap. It may also be areas or terrain points that compel the enemy either to change its course of action or to get additional external assets to intervene to keep on conducting his action. A target area of interest includes one or several main effort objective areas.
