A tactical mission task that denies the enemy access to an area or prevents his advance in a direction or along an avenue of approach. 3. At the operational level of war, form of defensive combat aimed at destroying the enemy and, at least, at stopping him by breaking his attacking power before he could depart from a given strip of terrain, the preservation of which represents the mission itself. The blocking maneuver can take two shapes: 1. position defense; 2. attrition defense.
