close operations area Area in which the operations aimed at forces in contact are carried out. It enables the tactical commander to conduct all his actions, both in contact and in the tactical depth. The forward line of the close operations area generally covers the opponent’s first operational echelon. Generally speaking, it is determined by the range of the indirect fire assets, and it corresponds to the fire support coordination line (FSCL) The rear line of the close operations area generally depends on the strength of engaged land forces, and it more or less corresponds to the rear lines of the areas of responsibilities allotted to this forces, starting from the line of contact.

close support That action of the supporting force against targets or objectives which are sufficiently close to the supported force as to require detailed integration or coordination of the supporting action with the fire, movement, or other actions of the supported force.
