Terms for subject Aviation (2593 entries)
air refuelling control point The geographical point over which the receiver arrives in the observation/refuelling position with respect to the assigned tanker
air refuelling initial point The geographical point at which the receiver aircraft enters the refuelling track, initiates radio contact with the tanker and begins a manoeuvre to rendezvous
air report A report from an aircraft in flight prepared in conformity with requirements for position and operational and/or meteorological reporting
air route The uncontrolled airspace within the boundaries or along the tracks specified on an aeronautical chart, or the controlled airspace within the boundaries or along the tracks specified in the Designated Airspace Handbook
air route surveillance radar An air route traffic control center (ARTCC) radar used primarily to detect and display an aircraft’s position while en route between terminal areas. The ARSR enables controllers to provide radar ATC service when aircraft are within the ARSR coverage. In some instances, ARSR may enable an ARTCC to provide terminal radar services similar to but usually more limited than those provided by a radar approach control.
air route traffic control center A facility established to provide ATC service to aircraft operating on IFR flight plans (FP) within controlled airspace and principally during the en route phase of flight. When equipment capabilities and controller workload permit, certain advisory/assistance services may be provided to VFR aircraft.
air show An aerial display or demonstration before an assembly of persons by one or more aircraft
air side The movement area of an airport, adjacent terrain and buildings or portions thereof, access to which is controlled.
air sovereignty test A flight that is designed to test the detection, identification and reporting functions of the air defence forces
Air Tasking Order (Frag) air-to-air and air-to-surface targets, TOTS, and mission support information ATO
air taxi The movement of a helicopter or vertical takeoff and landing aircraft (VTOL) above the surface of an aerodrome but normally not above 100 ft AGL. The aircraft may proceed via flight at airspeeds of more than 20 kt.
air traffic All aircraft in flight or operating on the manoeuvring area of an aerodrome
air traffic All aircraft in flight or operating on the manoeuvring area of an aerodrome.
air traffic advisory service A service provided within advisory airspace to ensure separation, in so far as practical, between aircraft which are operating on IFR flight plans
air traffic advisory service A service provided within advisory airspace to ensure separation, in so far as practical, between aircraft which are operating on IFR flight plans.
air traffic clearance An authorization issued by an ATC unit for an aircraft to proceed within controlled airspace in accordance with the conditions specified by that unit
air traffic control clearance An authorization issued by an ATC unit for an aircraft to proceed within controlled airspace in accordance with the conditions specified by that unit
air traffic control clearance Authorization for an aircraft to proceed under conditions specified by an air traffic control unit. Note 1.— For convenience, the term 'air traffic control clearance' is frequently abbreviated to 'clearance' when used in appropriate contexts. Note 2.— The abbreviated term 'clearance' may be prefixed by the words 'taxi', 'take-off', 'departure', 'en route', 'approach' or 'landing' to indicate the particular portion of flight to which the air traffic control clearance relates.
air traffic control instruction A directive issued by an ATC unit for ATC purposes
air traffic control instruction Directives issued by air traffic control for the purpose of requiring a pilot to take a specific action.
