Third and fourth age

New ways at looking at the ageing process have given rise to concepts such as 'the third age' and 'the fourth age'. The third age or the 'young old' are people characterised by an increase in life expectancy; substantial latent potential for better physical and mental fitness; the capacity to master the gains and losses of late life; and high emotional intelligence and wisdom. Meanwhile the fourth age or the 'oldest old' are people characterised by sizeable losses in cognitive potential and ability to learn; minimal physical functionality; increased chronic stress syndrome; sizeable prevalence of dementia; and high levels of frailty.

Researchers put the transition from the third to the fourth age in developed countries at around 75 to 80 years of age. In developing countries, the current age range of the third and fourth age is clearly much lower. Of course, individual transitions to the fourth age could begin at rather different ages, for instance, around 60 for some or around 90 for others.
