и чисто так совпало, что в русском тоже есть прям такая же форма речи -- и прям даже в том же приложении - "(двигаться) в темпе", например, подразумевает что в достаточно прытком темпе (вприпрыжку, ага)

или например "(играть) с настроением" тоже подразумевает что с бодрым таким настроением, с желанием

итп...

here's a line I wrote for my author:

Today’s wired world means sales and transactions are carried out at pace.

However my author chose to insert "fast" before "pace".

The adjective is redundant, in my opinion, and 'weighs' the sentence down. My question is: is "at pace" clear enough to convey "quickness"?

I don't recognise 'at pace' or even 'at fast pace' as English. To my mind it should be 'at a fast pace', and the adjective is necessary because a pace can be either fast or slow, or in between.

I endorse what Elwintee says. at a fast pace,which cannot be contracted clearly to 'at a pace'.

I'm probably being a bit stubborn and arguing a lost cause here, but I'm writing a book blurb, and as such, I consider that line a 'headline' of sorts. Newspaper headlines frequently 'trim the fat' and remove (arguably) redundant prepositions and articles.

Examples of such headlines:
"Mobility is driving into the mainstream at pace"

I see what you mean, this form is obviously catching on. All I can say is, I hope it dies out quickly. I don't want to be a language dinosaur, and I know we are no longer speaking Shakespeare's English, but 'at pace' seems meaningless to me. I acknowledge that we do say 'at speed' or 'at great speed', and talk of 'pace-bowlers' (i.e. those that bowl fast), but 'at pace' seems wrong because we refer to a horse's 'paces': there are several (walk, trot, canter...), and some are slower than others. If I pace along the street in deep thought, then I am understood to be walking slowly.

I'm sticking with Elwintee. 'At speed' is obviously OK but 'at pace' is totally non-specific and for me it means nothing. 'What pace?' I'm immediately drawn to demand. Then if you answer 'A fast pace' I say 'Game, set and match. You had to put in the article 'a'. That's all we're saying.

Наверное в том, что это плохой английский. Лично я ни разу не встречал, чтобы "pace" использовали без определения. Если можете привести правило или хотя бы примеры (без газетных заголовков), буду благодарен.
