interval The space between adjacent individuals, ground vehicles, or units in a formation that are placed side by side, measured abreast. 2. The space between adjacent aircraft measured from front to rear in units of time or distance. 3. At battery right or left, an interval ordered in seconds is the time between one gun firing and the next gun firing. Five seconds is the standard interval. 4. At rounds of fire for effect the interval is the time in seconds between successive rounds from each gun.

intervention Initial phase of operations during which a force is engaged mainly in order to solve the military and security issues of a crisis. It is aimed at the military defeat of the enemy, the end of combats or the reduction of the level of violence. This phase, combining coercion and violence control actions paves the way for stabilisation. There might be an overlap between these two phases. 2. Action taken to exert influence over, modify or control a specific activity.
