direction of attack
A specific direction or route that the main attack or the centre of gravity of the unit’s forces will follow. The unit is constrained, required to attack as indicated, and is not normally allowed to bypass the enemy. The direction of attack is used primarily in counterattacks or to ensure that supporting attacks make maximal contribution to the attack.
(Within NATO, it is referred to as an " attack route" .)
It can apply to battalion and lower levels. Direction of attack is a more restrictive control measure than axis of advance, and units are not free to maneuver off the assigned route. It is usually associated with infantry units conducting night operations.
