defence area For any particular command, the area extending from the forward edge of the battle area to its rear boundary. It is here that the decisive defensive battle is fought. 2. A fortified area or sector in which major or tactical formations are deployed in tactical or operational order and engaged in defensive action. The operational defence area extends to part of the defence sector of the major operational formation, together with army and army group defensive lines, and stretches back from the rear boundary of the tactical defence area to the full depth of the battle deployment. The tactical defence area includes the sector within which the units and tactical formations in the major formation's first echelon mount their defence. See also defence zone.

defence sufficiency A level of military power in a state that deters or counters aggression by a potential adversary, but which excludes the capability of surprise attack or large-scale offensive operations without prior deployment of armed forces or other measures.

defence zone An area of terrain designated for defence (or to be defended) by a major or tactical formation whose goals are: in a position defence, to defeat the enemy, to repel his attack and to hold key lines and sectors of terrain; in a mobile defence, to defeat advancing enemy forces by holding successive lines disposed in depth. defend A combat operation designed to defeat an attacker and prevent him from achieving his objectives. It employs all means and methods available to prevent, resist, or destroy an enemy attack. Forms of defensive operations are area and mobile. Choices of defensive operations are in-depth and forward. The defensive techniques are defend in sector, defend a battle position, and defend a strong point.
