It requires a close cooperation between the maritime authorities and the land authorities in their respective area of responsibility.

Naval forces and installations in fortified coastal regions or areas to protect naval bases against attack by land or sea and to assist ships in coastal waters or ground forces in coastal areas. The core elements of coastal defense are coastal missile and artillery troops, the naval infantry, rifle units and engineer units, and ground forces, naval vessels and aircraft if necessary.

An arm or branch whose roles are to protect maritime forces, ground troops, the civilian population and coastal installations from attack by enemy surface ships, to defend naval bases and other important maritime installations from the shore, to participate in amphibious and/or airborne landings, to assist ground forces in anti-airborne defense operations and to destroy surface ships.
